Free social media scheduling tools in 2026 (what each free plan actually includes)

"Free plan" means very different things across social media schedulers. Some are genuinely free forever with hard limits. Some are 7 or 14-day trials dressed up as free tiers. And the platforms themselves offer native scheduling that costs nothing but only works for one network at a time.

This is a plain list of what you actually get at $0 in 2026, so you can pick the right one for your situation instead of discovering the catch after you have connected everything. Prices and limits are as published in October 2026; vendors change them regularly, so confirm on their sites before committing.

Quick comparison

Tool Free forever? Channels Posts Users Notable limits
Buffer Yes 3 Limited queue per channel 1 Analytics and team features are paid
Publer Yes Small number of accounts Limited scheduled posts 1 Many features (analytics, some networks) are paid
Later No, trial only Trial Trial Trial Paid from $18.75/mo after trial
Postiz No, 7-day trial (card) Trial Trial Trial Paid from $29/mo after trial
Postfree Yes, no card 3 15 posts per month 1 Paid from $19/mo ($15 yearly) for more channels and unlimited posts
Meta Business Suite Yes Your Facebook Pages and linked Instagram accounts Unlimited Based on page roles Meta properties only
X native scheduling Yes Your X account Unlimited 1 Web only, X only
LinkedIn native scheduling Yes Your profile or page Unlimited Based on page roles LinkedIn only, limited editing
Mastodon scheduled posts Yes Your account Unlimited 1 Needs a client that exposes it

The pattern: third-party free plans give you cross-posting across networks with tight caps. Native schedulers give you unlimited posts on one network with no cross-posting. Which one you want depends on how many networks you post to.

Third-party free plans

Buffer free

Buffer's free plan has been around for a long time and is the most generous on channel count: three connected channels, which could be, say, LinkedIn, Instagram and X. Each channel has a capped queue of scheduled posts, so you cannot load up a month of content, but for a personal brand posting a few times a week it is workable.

What you do not get: analytics beyond the basics, team members, or the engagement inbox. Past three channels, Buffer charges per channel at roughly $5 to 6 per channel per month.

Good fit for: individuals posting to up to three networks who do not need analytics.

Publer free

Publer's free tier connects a small number of social accounts and allows a limited number of scheduled posts at a time. It supports a wide range of networks and has a good composer. Analytics, some networks, and extra accounts sit behind the paid plans, which run around $4 to 5 per social account per month plus a per-member fee.

Later (trial only)

Later does not have a free-forever plan in 2026. There is a trial, after which plans start at $18.75 a month. Later is strong on Instagram-first visual planning, so the trial is worth a look if that is your main need, but do not plan a long-term free setup around it.

Postiz (trial only)

Postiz is an open-source scheduler with a hosted version. The hosted version is trial-based, with paid plans from $29 a month. Because it is open source, you can also self-host it for free if you are comfortable running a server, which is a legitimate "free" option for technical users with time to maintain it.

Good fit for: developers who want to self-host, or teams willing to pay from $29 a month for the hosted version.

Postfree free

Postfree's free plan covers 3 channels, 15 posts a month, 1 GB of media and 10 AI captions, with no credit card and no end date. API and MCP access is included, so an AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT can schedule posts for you. Each paid tier can start with a 7-day free trial: a card is required, $0 is charged today, and you can cancel in two clicks before the trial ends and pay nothing. Paid plans start at $19 a month ($15 billed yearly) for five channels and unlimited posts, and the tool is built for short-form video creators cross-posting to TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels (YouTube and TikTok are live in beta) alongside X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram, Discord and Reddit.

Good fit for: short-form video creators who post a few times a week to up to three networks, or who want their AI assistant to do the posting.

Native schedulers (free, single network)

Meta Business Suite (Facebook Pages and Instagram)

If you only post to Facebook Pages and Instagram, Meta Business Suite is the obvious free choice. You can schedule posts, Stories and Reels, see basic insights, and manage comments and messages across both platforms. It is free, has no post limits, and supports multiple people through page roles.

Limitations: it only covers Meta properties, the interface changes frequently, and scheduling Stories for Instagram has had on-and-off restrictions over the years. Check the current state before relying on it.

X native scheduling

X lets you schedule posts from the web interface (the calendar icon in the composer). There is no post cap, and you can see your scheduled posts in a list. It is X only, there is no mobile app support for scheduling as of 2026, and editing a scheduled post is clunky. Threads (multi-post) scheduling is not supported natively.

LinkedIn native scheduling

LinkedIn added scheduling to the composer for both profiles and pages. You pick a date and time, and the post goes out. It works, it is free, and it is unlimited. The drawbacks: you cannot edit a scheduled post without deleting and recreating it, there is no calendar view, and it only covers LinkedIn.

Mastodon scheduled posts

Mastodon's API supports scheduled posts, but the default web interface does not expose the feature. Some third-party clients do. If you are on Mastodon and comfortable with a client app, you can schedule for free; otherwise you will need a scheduler that supports Mastodon (Postfree, Buffer and Publer all do).

Bluesky, Threads, Telegram, Discord

Bluesky and Threads do not offer native scheduling in 2026. Telegram supports scheduled messages natively in the app (long-press send). Discord has no native scheduling but accepts posts through webhooks, which is how most third-party tools connect.

How to choose

You post to one network. Use the native scheduler. It is free, unlimited, and you are not giving a third party access to your account.

You post to two or three networks a few times a week. Buffer free (3 channels) or Publer free will cover it. If short-form video is the core of what you post, Postfree's free plan covers TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Reels on 3 channels and 15 posts a month.

You post daily to several networks. No free plan will hold up. Add up your channels and compare per-channel pricing (Buffer, Publer) against flat tiers (Postfree Starter at $19 for five channels, Later from $18.75, Postiz from $29). For five channels the flat tiers are usually cheaper; for two channels the per-channel tools are.

You have a team or clients. Free plans are single-user across the board. You need a paid tier for team members and approvals regardless of vendor.

Things free plans quietly leave out

Read the fine print; the omissions matter more than the headline limits:

  • Analytics. Almost universally paid. If you need to know what worked, you will pay or use native analytics per network.
  • Video and large files. Storage caps are common on free tiers, and video is where they bite first. Check the limit before you plan a Reels or Shorts schedule around a free plan.
  • Multiple images per post. Some free tiers limit attachments.
  • Threads and multi-post content. Scheduling an X thread or Bluesky thread is often a paid feature.
  • Reliability signals. Some free tiers have lower-priority queues. Check whether failed posts are reported or just vanish.
  • Data export. If you leave, can you take your drafts and history with you?

Is it safe to connect accounts to a free tool?

The mainstream tools (Buffer, Publer, Postfree, Later, Postiz) connect through official platform APIs using OAuth, so you never hand over your password, and you can revoke access from the social network's own settings at any time. Look for a vendor that states it encrypts tokens at rest. Avoid any tool that asks for your actual password rather than redirecting you to the network to authorise.

For credential-based connections (Bluesky app passwords, Telegram bot tokens, Discord webhooks), create a dedicated app password or bot for the scheduler so you can revoke it independently.

FAQ

Is there a free scheduler with no post limit across multiple networks?

Not among the hosted third-party tools in 2026. Native schedulers (Meta Business Suite, X, LinkedIn) are unlimited but single-network. Self-hosting Postiz is the closest thing to unlimited and free, but you pay with your time and a server.

Can I use several free plans together to get around limits?

You can, and some people do: Buffer for three channels, Publer for a couple more, native tools for the rest. It works but you lose the single calendar view, which is most of the point of a scheduler. It is usually worth paying $15 to 19 a month for a flat tier once you cross three channels.

What happens if I hit the free plan limit mid-month?

On most tools the scheduler stops accepting new posts until the next cycle or until you upgrade; already-scheduled posts still go out. Good tools show the limit in the composer and offer the upgrade rather than silently dropping posts. Check each vendor's behaviour so a campaign does not stall on day 20.

If a free plan covers what you need, use one. If you post short-form video to several networks and want to test analytics, more channels and the approval workflow with no caps, sign up for the free plan at https://postfree.app/signup (no credit card), or try a paid plan for 7 days, and compare it against whatever else you are testing.
